Quad rings - Darcoid |
Quad
Rings are designed to outperform a standard O-Ring in rotary seal
applications. The four-lobed configuration creates a more stable seal
avoiding spiral twisting. This allows the use of a more narrow groove
width than a standard O-Ring groove, but can also be used in a
standard O-Ring groove. To minimize breakaway friction, an O-Ring
groove must be wide enough to allow rolling or twisting of the seal.
In the long stroke of a reciprocating seal application, this twisting
action can strain and eventually tear the rubber, causing a failure
mode known as spiral twist.
To
prevent spiral twist, a Quad Ring
seal's four-lobed configuration is designed to withstand the
distortion and extrusion often caused by high or pulsating pressure.
To accommodate these forces, a Quad-Ring seal uses a narrower groove
than a comparable O-Ring seal. The four lobed seal design not only
provides lower friction than an O Ring, but also, due to its square
cross section, it resists spiral twist. ` Quad rings can be used for
Static and Dynamic applications. In case of static application Quad
rings are fitted in the assembly where there is no dynamic movement.
Whereas, with a dynamic sealing configuration, quad ring in an
internal groove should be stretched over the root of the groove. With
external grooves, Quad ring is installed in compressed state.
What's
more, a lubricant reservoir formed between the sealing lips improves
performance at start up. Their 4-lobe configuration also helps to
eliminate the seal from twisting in the groove causing premature
failure. Quad Rings can be used
in a wide variety of static and dynamic sealing applications. With
the unique 4-lobe configuration, Quad Rings have 2 sealing areas per
side as opposed to 1 sealing area on an O-ring. Quad Rings are
available exclusively from the house of Darcoid Nor-Cal Seal.
